Moved to Slovenia as a Fulbright professor in 1992, teaching two classes of student journalists at the University of Ljubljana. She also covered war for the first time that year, in Bosnia and in Serbia, an experience that led to a career as a foreign correspondent and editor. She later reported for Washington Post and then the Chicago Tribune in Warsaw, Jerusalem, Baghdad, Tehran, Cairo and Rome. Over the last decade, she has been an editor in London at The Financial Times, where she launched its investigations team and at Kaiser Health News, where she was executive editor in Washington D.C. Most recently, she has been the international business editor, in London, for The New York Times. She has been on staff at major news organizations, including the New York Times, where she was recently the international business editor based in London.
